Vijender Kumar defeats Carlos Gongora

Yipee!! Vijender Kumar has qualified for the semi-finals. It was an absolute pleasure to watch the match. I am ecstatic at the victory achieved by Vijender Kumar. Now, let's see if he would help us to another medal at the Olympics. He has made up for Jitender Kumar and Akhil Kumar's defeat.

In any case, we have been assured of a Bronze medal. At the Olympics, both the losing semi-finalists in boxing receive a bronze medal each. So now we have 3 Olympic champions- Abhinav Bindra, Sushil Kumar and Vijender Kumar. But we want Vijender Kumar to aim for the Gold Medal and nothing less!!

This is for the kind attention of all Indians

We are a nation of 113 crore strong - one sixth of the total world population and should we feel so delirious having won a solitary Gold medal and a single Bronze in the Beijing Olympics?

A total of 663 medals have been won in the present Olympics so far in various events and our share is only 2 medals whereas China has won 77 (with 44 Gold), USA 79 medals (with 26 Gold), Great Britain 36 medals (with 16 Gold), Australia 35 (with 11 Gold) ………….. Even much smaller countries like Indonesia and Cuba have performed much better than us.

Such poor performance at the Olympics each time should be a time for serious introspection by those in power as well as each individual of this country as to where all we have been going wrong as an independent country.

We have failed to provide the required world class sports training facilities and a healthy sporting environment to our youth even after 60 years. A sports culture is almost missing in our country. We are happy to be crazy only about the game of cricket and bollywood movies at the cost of ignoring and losing in all other games and sports.

A country’s performance in Olympics is actually a good indicator of the health of that nation and the well being of its people. Unfortunately by our poor performance in each Olympics, we project a very negative image of our country and ourselves to the entire world . This is nothing to be proud of. We do not take this colossal failure of ours seriously at all. We must do everything in our power to change that mindset.

it is not enough just to hurriedly declare a prize money of 50 lacs or one crore for the winner after he or she has won a medal while at the same time holding back the badly needed encouragement, help and back up to all the budding and promising sports persons for preparation and training on a consistent basis for many years at school and college levels much before the actual Games.

I agree with you. But if we are not delirious about the little victories that we achieve at the Olympics, how do you think that winners like Abhinav Bindra, Sushil Kumar and Vijender Kumar will feel? If we do celebrate their victories, why would other sportsmen even bother to make an attempt to win an Olympic medal. Other Indian sportsmen must feel that great adulation and rewards await at their doorstep if they are successful in their attempt to win a medal at the Olympics.

This is for "an aspiring journalist" friend and others:

Certainly we should feel happy and proud over these achievements of our sports persons and must give the highest honor to Abhinav Bindra and other medal winners for their outstanding performance in world's greatest sports arena.

Their wins gain special importance keeping in view the years of dedicated hard work and efforts put in by them all alone without help and support form the government or any other quarter.

It would not be wrong to say that they have won despite a government and society which is only good at nipping all talent and creativity in the bud.

While celebrating these few and far in-between victories, we must pause seriously and frequently to think what ails us and our nation that our track record in Olympics is and has been so poor for over a century.

We (our government) must examine this colossal failure on our country's part very deeply and thoroughly and take immediate real concrete steps (not just talk about it)to give due importance to sports at all levels nation wide so that in years to come we too have many world class champions who can win gold medals by the dozen and we are not put to shame for a dismal performance in each Olympics every four years.

I would add the following to my above post:

As a national we badly need to wean ourselves away from our extreme craze for and total pre-occupation with the game of cricket and the Bollywood trash. That is most unhealthy. We must pay attention to all other games and sports and direct our energies in setting up, learning and playing them as well.
It is never too late to start a good thing !

Yeah. Let's celebrate the little victories that we achieve at the Olympics and at the same time be brave enough to face the ground realities. We still have a long way to go as far as doing well at the international level is concerned.

About our pre-occupation with Bollywood and Cricket- I don't understand why we can't be passionate about everything Indian; be it cricket, Bollywood or boxing.

Why does it have to be "this or that" and not "this and that"? Let's develop a passion for every nice thing concerning India.

Dear "aspiring journalist"

Mothers all over the world wean away their infants from bottle milk once the kids grow up and are able to eat and digest other healthy solid foods.

Here in our country most of our people are badly stuck up with Bollywood and Cricket simply as spectators and as a matter of habit for the past 60 years with little urge for some positive action on their own part because that would break their lazy couch comfort and would need some effort and expense.

It is with that in mind I say that they need to be weaned away towards a more healthy life style and given some incentives to focus on physical fitness through more outdoor activity and by playing other games.

Time to move on and build a healthy and fit nation where there would be no dearth of world class champions.
